3 Fabulous Female Fat Loss Supplements

3 Fabulous Female Fat Loss Supplements

by Dr. Keoni Teta

Of the two genders, women typically have a more difficult time losing excess fat than men.  This is in part due to men typically having more muscle mass than women. Another significant contributing factor is the hormonal differences between men and women.  The hormonal environment for women (estrogen dominant as compared to men), no matter their age, promotes more fat storage. For a woman of childbearing age the estrogen dominant environment stores fat in areas that give younger women the stereotypical hour glass shape. Unfortunately, as estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone levels decrease after menopause, fat storage increases in areas that are more problematic and difficult to lose from, like the torso.

Sex hormones along with insulin, cortisol, and others, play an extremely important role in conditions that promote fat gain, like PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), Metabolic Syndrome, and Type II Diabetes.

When the hormonal environment is not appropriate, weight loss becomes extremely difficult.

The good news is that simple lifestyle changes, especially with exercise and nutrition, can turn this around in a way that is sustainable and healthy.

With that being said, sometimes extra help is needed to shed the excess fat weight.  Yes, we have seen plenty of women in our clinic who seem to do everything right in their life, but just cannot lose weight no matter how they eat or exercise.  This is where nutraceuticals can help.

The three fat loss supplements that Metabolic Effect uses the most for stubborn fat in women are the following:

  1. Metabolic FemBalance
  2. Craving Cocoa
  3. Fiber complex

But before I get into the specifics of why ME uses these three, as opposed to other nutraceuticals,  let’s go over the basics of what is needed for fat loss in most women.

When assessing a supplement to help women lose excess fat weight, you need something that has evidence to support its use and also does the following:

  • Helps to balance the hormonal environment
  • Reduces the likelihood of over consuming calories
  • Helps detoxify by promoting body’s innate detox mechanisms
  • Promotes a consistent and sustainable active lifestyle
  • Helps to maintain muscle mass
  • Promotes healthy gut bacteria and gut function
  • Is non-toxic and very safe in both the short-term and long-term
  • Does not promote rebound weight gain
  • Reduces cravings
  • And, of course promotes fat burning.

Another big consideration when choosing any fat loss product is safety.  At Metabolic Effect we only consider products that meet the following criteria:

  • Has a long history of use in the human diet as food or food component
  • Has a large evidence base that supports its use for fat loss and prevention of weight gain, both directly and indirectly
  • Is not synthetic, meaning that the ingredients are all natural
  • Has a very high standard of quality control
  • Has only Non-GMO ingredients
  • Uses ingredients that are the most bioactive forms for the body.

OK, let’s briefly go over each of these fat loss supplements; highlighting why they work so well for fat-loss in women…

Metabolic FemBalance:

The ingredients in Metabolic FemBalance help stabilize the female endocrine system by balancing hormones and optimizing endogenous detoxification.

The two main ingredients that do this are: Chaste Tree/Berry and Black Cohosh.  Chaste Tree/Berry has an adaptogenic effect on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, meaning that it can help balance hormones based on the needs of the individual.  The overall measurable effect is a slight raise in progesterone 4 levels and lowering in prolactin. 2,3  This herb, throughout the ages, has enabled women to have normal and more regular menstrual cycles.  It is an ideal herb for people suffering with PCOS, PMS, and amenorrhea.  It has even been shown to help women suffering from menopausal symptoms. 1  Chaste Tree/Berry has a long history of use, and in research has shown to be well-tolerated and safe.

In studies, Black Cohosh has been shown to lower Luteinizing Hormone (LH) without effecting Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH).  Overall, this hormonal effect reduced hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness and thinning, sleep disturbances, and emotional symptoms in various studies. 5-7  This herb has been extensively studied in Germany, and found to be very safe and well-tolerated.

Two plant chemicals that have been proven to help safely detoxify excess estrogens and protect against cancer are Diindolylmethane (DIM) 8-10 and Chrysin. 11,12   This estrogen metabolizing effect appears to protect the body against hormone sensitive cancers, as well as provide benefits for women experiencing  painful or excessive periods, endometriosis, and even cervical dysplasia and breast pain.  DIM is found in the Brassica family of vegetables like cabbage, kale, broccoli, and brussel sprouts. Sulforaphanes, the main component of Broccoli Seed Extract,  also shows significant activity against hormone sensitive cancers.13  Chrysin, a flavonoid, is an important bioactive constituent of many different fruits, vegetables and even mushrooms.

Calcium-D-Glucarate, 14 aka D-glucarate, is a nutraceutical that supports a detoxification mechanism in your body called glucoronidation.  Basically, this process takes toxins and combines them with water-soluble substances, thus making them more easily removed from the body.  It helps with estrogen metabolism, and also appears to prevent a number of cancers.  D-Glucarate is found in grapefruit, apples, oranges, and cruciferous vegetables.

Green Tea Extract (EGCG) and Resveratrol are powerful anti-oxidant phytochemicals that have multiple, beneficial effects on the body.  Research shows they help modulate and optimize hormones, protect against cancer, and evidence reflects they help with weight loss. 15-17

The other components of ME’s Metabolic FembalanceCalcium, Magnesium, Vitamins B6, B12, and Folate, help to support the hormonal balancing effects of the phytonutrients above.  These vitamins and minerals are the most bioavailable forms for your body.  Calcium and magnesium have been proven to support bone health, and also show evidence for ameliorating PMS symptoms. 18,19  B vitamins reflect traits that promote proper cell differentiation (thus helping to prevent cancer), and lower homocysteine (a marker for heart disease), among many other supportive roles in the body.20, 21

Craving Cocoa:

This is the product that my brother, Jade, and I developed.  We wanted a nutraceutical that satisfied cravings and stopped hunger without feeling deprived.  This product does both of these things with three ingredients: cocoa, branched chain ammo acids (BCAAs), and glucomannan.  The sweetness in the product allows you to feel like you are eating a high calorie chocolate treat, but without the calories.

Cocoa has been shown to improve mood, especially when it is eaten in chocolate mindfully. 23 Cocoa contains “feel-good” neurochemicals like serotonin, anandamide (AKA the “Bliss” molecule), and phenylethylamine.  It also contains the amino acid, tyrosine, a precursor to dopamine.  These same molecules may be the reason cocoa seems to improve mood.

Cocoa has evidence showing that it can decrease appetite, especially if the polyphenol content is high. 22, 32  Darker chocolate has much higher content of polyphenols than milk chocolate, and is better for your health and fat loss goals.  Cocoa, also has plenty of research showing it supports brain, skin, and cardiovascular health. 24 There is even evidence that suggests it may help with fat loss in a more direct way, 25, 26, 31 if the calories are lower, as they are in darker chocolates.

And, yes, Metabolic Effect’s Craving Cocoa gives you your chocolate fix without the excess calories.

BCAA’s (leucine, isoleucine, and valine) have been shown to help preserve muscle mass, 27 especially, in energy restricted states such as dieting. 29 This is extremely important because dieting is one of the main causes of rebound weight gain, especially when muscle mass is lost… and it usually is during prolonged dieting.  Furthermore, BCAAs, especially leucine, has evidence of a satiating and hormone balancing effect. 28,30

Glucomannan is a water-soluble dietary fiber derived from the Asian plant, Amorphophallus Konjac.  It has a long history of use in Asian cuisine as a noodle and gelatin substitute.  This fiber has lots of evidence showing to be useful for weight loss. 33-35 In fact, of all the known fibers, glucomannan, has the most evidence supporting its use in weight loss products.

Fiber Complex:

A good fiber supplement supports health and fat loss in many ways, including the following:

  • Reduces appetite 41
  • Decreases caloric intake 42
  • Puts the brakes on rising blood sugar 40
  • Blunts insulin and improves insulin resistance 40
  • Helps reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels 39
  • Modulates gut bacteria and improves gastro-intestinal health 38
  • Aids in detoxification and prevention of cancer 37
  • Directly helps with weight loss 36

So, what is a good fiber supplement?

One that contains a mixture of soluble and insoluble fiber, without any added sweeteners, dyes, colorings or synthetic chemicals. In addition, a good fiber supplement should NOT negatively impact your daily caloric intake. It also should be well-tolerated, with low allergenicity.

And, this is exactly what Metabolic Effect’s Fiber Complex is.

Anyway, it contains 12 types of fiber: Fibregum tan acacia gum, creafibe cellulose, guar gum, cranberry seed powder, carrot fiber, inulin, citrus fiber, apple pectin, glucomannan, psyllium husk, flax, and prune.  It is also free of phytates, found in grain fibers, which bind minerals so they can’t be absorbed.

Knowing all the benefits of increasing dietary fiber; considering the average US person gets only somewhere between 5 – 10  grams of fiber in their diet per day; and acknowledging that our ancient ancestors, as well as modern day hunter-gatherers, have been estimated to get between 50 – 100 grams, or more, of fiber per day; it is no wonder chronic disease and obesity are such epidemics in today’s society.

Being overweight or obese has many causes, and, as such, requires changes in lifestyle that help the body in multiple ways. By far, the most important weapon in fighting fat gain, for both women and men, is nutrition.  This requires lowering energy intake or lowering calories in such a way that does not cause hormonal or endocrine imbalance.  The research is clear that a high fiber, high phytonutrient diet, not only fights obesity, but prevents numerous other diseases.

For women especially, when utilizing a nutraceutical that helps support fat loss, it is necessary to balance hormones, control cravings, and increase dietary fiber.  The above supplements and a healthy nutrition, not high in calories, will give you a significant advantage in sparking your metabolism, thus enabling you to cut the excess fat.
