Working Out to Lose Fat:

Monte is featured in our book The New ME Diet under the name Maurice. We changed his name in the book as we did all our clients, but he has consented to allow us to use his before and after pictures here on the site along with his story. Since his transformation, he has made a career shift and has become a personal trainer and group exercise instructor certified through Metabolic Effect and other organizations. He is one of the most talented and motivational trainers we have.

Monte, now thirty-six found himself overweight in his early thirties and wanted to do something about it. He started out at 260 pounds with 32 percent body fat.  He dealt with his situation much the way many people do today. He went on a low-carb diet and exercised for two hours a day six days a week focusing mainly on aerobic exercise. After 4 months, he lost thirty pounds and his body fat reduced to 26 percent.  However, he remained frustrated because his body shape did not change much and he felt he was still carrying fat around his middle. He was losing weight in other areas but could not seem to get his waist down despite his effort. He was also fighting back constant hunger and a persistent craving for sweets.

Similar to many people seeking body change, Monte soon discovered two hours a day in the gym was too much and his hunger and cravngs started winning out. Within two months his weight ballooned back to 260 pounds. What made it worse is his body fat percent actually had increased by 3 percent from 32% to 35%. His diet and exercise program, had in the end, caused him to lose muscle and gain fat.

Monte knew he could no longer devote all that time to working out, nor did he want to go back on a deprivation diet, so he was intrigued by the Metabolic Effect classes at his gym.  Instead of spinning for an hour daily he started working out three days a week doing 30-minute Metabolic Effect classes, followed by 30 minutes of rest-based interval training.  His exercise went from twelve hours each week on his old plan to just three with the Metabolic Effect. He began to see changes quickly. He was not losing weight, but he was definitely dropping inches and body fat, which he measured on a handheld body fat machine.

Monte is what we call a mixed burner, so instead of cutting out all carbs in his diet, he added more protein and controlled his carb intake by having onlyt ten bites at a meal.  Over the next nine months, Monte lost forty pounds and went from 35 percent body fat to 19 percent body fat. His waist size went from 42 inches to 36 inches. And this time their was no rebound weight gain.
